This week's poem is John Greening's translation of "On the Eastern Front" by Georg Trakl. The original poem "Im Osten" (which follows the English here) was probably written in the aftermath. Georg Trakl is an important lyric poet in German literature of the early 20th century. Critics associate his work with various modern artistic movements, and he is viewed as one of the principal writers to set the dark, introspective tone that later influenced the course of German expressionism. Affinities with imagism have also been noted in Trakl's strikingly visual style. The upbringing of Georg and his younger sister Grete, with whom he developed an intimate relationship, was left to a young Alsatian woman. The governess, Marie Boring, acquainted the Trakl children with French language and literature and introduced Georg to the poetry of Rimbaud, Verlaine and Baudelaire.


The occasional grace of Trakl's poetry, seen in poems like Helian ('In the lonely hours of the mind/ It is lovely to walk in the sun/ Along the yellow walls of summer') provide hard-earned moments of solace and contentment amidst the terror of poems like 'Grodek', giving a sense of balance to his vision. The difficulties in Trakl extend beyond the rules, with his expressionist sense of color and the way he expressed feeling through describing landscape.
