Paperback, , So I started with Big Red by Damien Larkin, which I was lucky enough to win a copy of an awfully long time ago, and yeah about halfway through I realised it was actually published by an indie-press (Dancing Lemur) and it’s sci-fi not fantasy, so it’s really got nothing to do with SPFM. But it’s “Reluctant Hero” today and this fits that, sort of, and frankly a review of anything is a triumph for me right now having read like . Big Red is a military sci-fi told from the perspective of a young Irish soldier Darren Loughlin, conscripted into a British Army-led organisation known as the Mars Occupation Force. After returning from a year-long tour of duty in the Nazi founded New Berlin colony on Mars, he and his battalion wake in a highly traumatised state at the same time that communications with Earth’s off-world colonies drop.
Big Red - Damien Larkin () The life of a reader contains many bittersweet moments. For me, one of the worst is discovering a writer that is new to me, but that I later find out has already passed, and will no longer be writing new work. A review of Blood Red Sand By Damien Larkin I have been eagerly awaiting this book all year. Blood Red Sand is the sequel to Larkin's debut military sci-fi Big Red. Big Red is a story about soldiers fighting on Mars as part of the Mars Occupation Force and a story involving Nazi's that escaped WWII and colonized Mars. I want to start out by saying I discovered Damien Larkin's work during an online panel hosted by Quarancon about writing fight scenes. I was intrigued by his passion when discussing his writing, so much so that I went and bought Big Red right away. And I was not disappointed.
